Standards and specifying
CSA G30.5 and ASTM A1064 welded wire reinforcement standards
ASTM A1064/A1064M and CSA G30.5 are the active standards governing carbon-steel welded wire reinforcement for concrete. Under WRI Tech Fact TF 101-R-14, ASTM A1064 replaced four legacy specifications: ASTM A82 (plain wire), ASTM A185 (plain fabric), ASTM A496 (deformed wire) and ASTM A497 (deformed fabric). When drawings call for ASTM A185 or A497, ASTM A1064 is the direct modern submittal replacement.
The active standards: ASTM A1064 and CSA G30.5
When specifying or purchasing welded wire mesh for reinforced concrete in Canada and the United States, structural submittals must comply with two harmonized standards:
- CSA G30.5:Welded Steel Wire Fabric for Concrete Reinforcement. This is the official Canadian standard published by the CSA Group and directly referenced in CSA A23.1 (Concrete materials) and CSA A23.3 (Design of concrete structures).
- ASTM A1064/A1064M:Standard Specification for Carbon-Steel Wire and Welded Wire Reinforcement, Plain and Deformed, for Concrete. Published by ASTM International, this is the primary North American manufacturing standard used by steel mills.
Both standards define wire cold-drawing dimensional tolerances, electrical resistance weld shear strength, tensile yield strength, and testing protocols.
The legacy ASTM crosswalk: why older standards still appear on drawings
Estimators and project managers frequently encounter structural drawing notes specifying standards that were withdrawn over a decade ago:
ASTM A185 / A185M(Standard Specification for Steel Welded Wire Reinforcement, Plain)ASTM A497 / A497M(Standard Specification for Steel Welded Wire Reinforcement, Deformed)ASTM A82 / A82M(Standard Specification for Steel Wire, Plain)ASTM A496 / A496M(Standard Specification for Steel Wire, Deformed)
In 2009, ASTM International officially consolidated all four separate wire and fabric standards into a single unified specification: ASTM A1064/A1064M (WRI Tech Fact TF 101-R-14).
The table below provides a direct submittal crosswalk for engineers, general contractors, and building officials:
| Historical / Withdrawn ASTM Standard | Material Product Type | Modern Active Replacement Standard | Equivalent Canadian Standard | Mandatory Minimum Yield Strength (fy) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A82 / A82M (Withdrawn) | Plain cold-drawn steel wire | ASTM A1064 / A1064M | CSA G30.3 | 450 to 515 MPa (65 to 75 ksi) |
| ASTM A185 / A185M (Withdrawn) | Plain welded wire fabric (WWF) | ASTM A1064 / A1064M | CSA G30.5 | 450 MPa (65 ksi) minimum |
| ASTM A496 / A496M (Withdrawn) | Deformed cold-worked wire | ASTM A1064 / A1064M | CSA G30.14 | 485 to 550 MPa (70 to 80 ksi) |
| ASTM A497 / A497M (Withdrawn) | Deformed welded wire fabric | ASTM A1064 / A1064M | CSA G30.5 | 485 MPa (70 ksi) minimum |
If an engineering specification or municipal tender cites ASTM A185 or ASTM A497, submitting Mill Test Reports (MTRs) certified to ASTM A1064/A1064M Grade 65 or Grade 70 satisfies all architectural and structural intent.
Material requirements and testing under ASTM A1064
To ensure structural reliability, ASTM A1064 mandates three fundamental mechanical tests:
1. Tensile and yield strength testing
- Plain wire (W-wire): Minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa (75 ksi); minimum yield strength of 450 MPa (65 ksi) measured at 0.5% extension under load.
- Deformed wire (D-wire): Minimum tensile strength of 550 MPa (80 ksi); minimum yield strength of 485 MPa (70 ksi).
- High-strength grades: ASTM A1064 permits specifiers to order designated yield strengths up to 550 MPa (80 ksi), recognized in ACI 318-25 Table 20.2.2.4(a) for structural shear and flexure calculations.
2. Weld shear strength requirement
The critical structural advantage of welded wire reinforcement is mechanical anchorage at each welded intersection. Under ASTM A1064 Section 7.4, specimen welds must undergo mechanical shear testing:
Whenever the cross-sectional area of the smaller wire is at least 40% of the larger wire:
Required Minimum Weld Shear Strength = 241 MPa (35,000 psi) × Area of the Larger Wire
For example, on a 6×6 W2.9/W2.9 sheet where both wires have an area of 0.029 in² (18.7 mm²), each weld intersection must resist at least 1,015 lb (4.51 kN) of pure shear force before failure.
3. Reduction of area (Ductility test)
Cold-drawn wire must maintain sufficient ductility for field handling. Plain wire under ASTM A1064 must achieve a minimum reduction of cross-sectional area of 30% at the necked fracture zone during tensile testing.
Canadian building code integration (CSA A23.1 and CSA A23.3)
In Canadian structural practice:
- CSA A23.1 Section 5.1.2 mandates that all steel welded wire reinforcement placed on site must conform to CSA G30.5 or ASTM A1064.
- CSA A23.3 Section 12 sets out lap splice and development length calculations for welded wire reinforcement in suspended slabs, precast components, and shear walls.
- Mill Test Reports (MTRs) certifying chemical heat analysis, yield strength, tensile strength, and weld shear strength must be kept on file and provided upon request.

Questions
What standard replaced ASTM A185?
ASTM A1064/A1064M completely replaced ASTM A185 for plain welded wire fabric and ASTM A497 for deformed welded wire fabric.
Is CSA G30.5 the same as ASTM A1064?
They are harmonized specifications. CSA G30.5 is the official Canadian standard for welded steel wire fabric, and material produced to ASTM A1064 complies with CSA G30.5 mechanical and dimensional requirements.
What is the minimum yield strength of welded wire reinforcement?
Under ASTM A1064, plain wire (W-wire) has a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa (65 ksi); deformed wire (D-wire) has a minimum yield strength of 485 MPa (70 ksi).
Why do structural drawings still reference ASTM A185?
Many architectural and structural engineering master specifications have not been updated since ASTM consolidated the standards in 2009. Citing ASTM A1064 on submittals satisfies the old A185 requirement.
