Applications

Welded wire mesh in shallow footings, grade beams and strip foundations

Short answer

Structural welded wire reinforcement mats directly replace field-tied rebar in continuous strip footings, grade beams and spread pads. In a WRI structural design study (July 2026), 4 gauge (W4.0) and heavy WWR mats satisfied ACI 318-25 Chapter 13 flexural and shear demands while reducing ironworker trench labour by over 50%. Concrete cast against earth requires 75 mm (3 in) of cover.

Moving beyond flat slabs: WWR in foundation footings

Most contractors and builders associate welded wire mesh exclusively with flat concrete slabs-on-ground, driveways, and toppings.

When it comes to foundation strip footings, continuous grade beams, and isolated column spread pads, drawings traditionally specify hand-tied mats of #4 (10M) or #5 (15M) rebar. Tying individual bars inside deep, muddy foundation trenches is physically difficult, slow, and prone to improper bar spacing or fallen chairs.

In July 2026, the Wire Reinforcement Institute published an engineered foundation design guide demonstrating how modern structural welded wire reinforcement (WWR) mats completely replace tied rebar in continuous residential and commercial shallow foundations (WRI Building Shallow Footings, July 2026).

Engineering design requirements under ACI 318-25 and CSA A23.3

Foundation design differs from light crack-control flatwork: footings must resist positive soil pressure, two-way punching shear, and longitudinal flexure caused by differential soil settlement:

1. Concrete cover cast against earth

Because foundation trenches are excavated directly into native soil, moisture protection is paramount. Under CSA A23.1 Section 6.6.6 and ACI 318-25 Table 20.5.1.3.1, any concrete cast directly against earth without formwork requires a minimum concrete cover of 75 mm (3 in) over all steel reinforcement. Use heavy concrete dobies or 75 mm plastic foundation chairs to hold mats off the trench bottom.

2. High-strength steel yield advantage

Under ASTM A1064, cold-drawn wire provides minimum yield strengths from 450 to 550 MPa (65 to 80 ksi), compared with Grade 400W (60 ksi) rebar. In flexural foundation design per the July 2026 WRI design example, utilizing 550 MPa (80 ksi) welded wire mats permits a 15% to 25% reduction in total steel cross-sectional area while delivering identical factored moment resistance (Mr).

3. Lap splices in continuous strip footings

When joining consecutive 20 ft mats along a continuous foundation trench, maintain a lap splice of two cross-wire spacings plus 50 mm (2 in) per WRI Detail WWR.2 (typically 350 mm · 14 in for 6×6 mesh), and secure the lap with tie wire.

Field installation velocity in foundation trenches

Field productivity trials cited in the July 2026 WRI study measured footing assembly times:

  • Placing, spacing, and hand-tying 60 metres (200 linear feet) of continuous rebar footing steel required 3.5 ironworker hours.
  • Dropping pre-fabricated 8 × 20 ft welded wire footing mats onto chairs, overlapping 350 mm, and securing laps required under 45 minutes: a 78% reduction in trench labour.

In rainy weather or sub-zero Canadian winter conditions where trench walls risk caving in, completing steel placement in 45 minutes significantly lowers project geotechnical risk.

Questions

Can wire mesh be used in concrete footings?

Yes. Engineered structural welded wire reinforcement mats conforming to ASTM A1064 / CSA G30.5 satisfy all building code requirements for strip footings, spread pads, and grade beams under ACI 318-25 and CSA A23.3.

How much cover does wire mesh need in a ground footing?

Concrete cast directly against earth requires a minimum of 75 mm (3 in) of concrete cover under the steel under CSA A23.1.

What size wire mesh is used for shallow footings?

4 gauge (6×6 W4.0/W4.0) or heavier deformed D-wire mats are commonly specified to match the structural capacity of 10M and 15M rebar.

How do you support wire mesh in a foundation trench?

Use 75 mm (3 in) precast concrete dobies or heavy-duty plastic foundation chairs with wide base plates so supports do not sink into soft excavation dirt.
