Where 10 gauge is used

  • Composite steel deck slabs. The US Steel Deck Institute composite deck standard sets the minimum temperature and shrinkage reinforcement at 0.00075 times the concrete area above the deck flutes, and not less than 6×6 W1.4/W1.4 (IAPMO UES ER-0981, citing ANSI/SDI C). That is one reason deck and joist fabricators order it in volume.
  • Light slabs, toppings and non-structural pads where drawings call for W1.4.

10 gauge carries about half the steel of 6 gauge. It is lighter and easier to handle, but it is not a substitute where 6 or 4 gauge is specified. See 4 vs 6 vs 10 gauge.

Can I use 6 gauge in the meantime? Where the design allows more steel than the minimum, yes. 6 gauge is part of our current range. Check with your engineer before substituting.
